It's Book Week and Speech Pathology Week in the same week, and our speech pathologists could not be happier. 💜
Speechies love books. Not only because they are fun, but because reading together supports a lot of things at once: language, communication, learning and connection.
If you would like to get a bit more out of story time at home, here are five things our team suggests.
1. Read together. Even a few minutes a day helps.
2. Talk about the pictures. What can you see? What do you reckon happens next?
3. Ask open ended questions, then wait. Give your child time to answer. That pause matters more than most people expect.
4. Follow their interests. Let them choose the book, even if it is the same one for the fortieth night in a row.
5. Have fun with it. Silly voices, actions, and plenty of repetition.
There is no right way to do this and it does not need to be a big production. A few minutes on the couch counts.

This is the kind of speech pathology work we are hiring for. 💬
Meet Eleanor, one of our speech pathologists.
She has worked with Han for 18 months. He has finished school, started a barista course at TAFE, drives himself around and plays a lot of sport. The support he asked for was around communication.
So their sessions are built on practical goals. Speaking up for himself. Feeling comfortable in conversation with people his own age. Working through a problem when something goes sideways at TAFE.
There is learning, there is practising, and there is usually a game of UNO.
That is where the impact of this job sits. Not in a score on a form, but in the ordinary parts of someone's week. Study. Work. Friendships. Having a say in your own decisions.
It is also a job with room to move. Sessions happen at home, at TAFE, out in the community or over telehealth, and our team work flexible hours with the option to work from home for notes and reports.
Kids and adults. Metro and regional. And long enough with someone to see the work through properly.
The way Eleanor describes her role is simple. She offers the strategies and the tools. What someone does with them is theirs.

Speaking is not the only way to be heard. 💬
Meet Eva, one of our speech pathologists.
A big part of Eva's work is AAC. That stands for augmentative and alternative communication, and it covers everything from a simple picture board to a speech generating device on a tablet.
Eva spent years working in an autism school with some form of AAC in her hands every single day. What she saw was that AAC gave kids a way to say what they needed and wanted, and a way to connect with the people around them.
The moments that stay with her are the ones where someone finds a way to be understood. She talks about how much that matters for the family too, being able to hear what the person they love has to say.
Alongside AAC, Eva also supports swallowing and mealtimes, speech and language, and works with autistic children and adults. That mix is fairly common here, because our team works across the lifespan and across most areas of speech pathology.

Speech pathology is not just about speech. 💬
This week is Speech Pathology Week, and this year's theme is Communication creates possibility.
It is a good moment to clear up something we hear a lot. Plenty of people assume a speech pathologist only helps with saying words clearly. That is part of it. But there is so much more.
Our speech pathologists also work on understanding language, getting the words out in a way that suits the person, safe eating and drinking, and communication devices and tools for people who do not use speech to be heard.
As one of our speechies put it, communication is about so much more than talking. It is body language, gestures, and really understanding where a person is coming from and what they are trying to tell you.
That understanding is where the possibility comes in. Being able to communicate opens the door to school, work, friendships and having a say in your own day.

We're hiring Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists, and instead of just listing the roles, here's what the work actually looks like at ORS.
Your caseload is mixed. Some sessions in clinic, some in homes and schools, some over telehealth. You'll work with NDIS participants, Medicare and privately funded clients, so you build a wide variety of skills and experience along the way.
You're not the only clinician in the room. Psychology, dietetics, OT, speech pathology and positive behaviour support all sit under one organisation, so when a client's needs cross disciplines, you can talk to someone immediately.
You get supervision that's actually scheduled, not squeezed in. And a clinical progression pathway so "what's next" is a conversation, not a guess.

Woohoo 🎉 congratulations 🥳 team ORS
When Ronnie first sat down with Mukesh, one of our Inclusive Employment consultants, looking for a job felt overwhelming. He had been out of the workforce for a while and a lot of his confidence had gone with it. He wasn't sure what he had to offer, and he wasn't sure where to start.
So Mukesh didn't start with job ads.
He started by getting to know Ronnie properly. What he had done before. What he was good at. What kind of work he would actually want to get up for. Somewhere in those conversations, a small detail turned out to matter a great deal. Ronnie is a calm, confident driver. In the disability sector, where getting people safely to appointments, activities and community programs is a big part of the day, that is a genuinely valuable skill.
From there, the two of them rebuilt Ronnie's resume around what he could do rather than the gap in his work history, and started looking at support work.
That search led to Dream Maker, a provider offering community access, daily living support, transport and semi-independent living. Their team says Ronnie settled in quickly. He turns up on time, he says yes to shifts whether they are ongoing or one-off, and he is happy to support participants he has not met before.
The part Ronnie's employer keeps coming back to is what he has taught himself since. Supporting someone to build their own skills and independence is not something you can pick up in an induction. Ronnie has worked that out on the job, in his own time, because he wanted to be good at it.
Today he is working around 22 hours a week, and he describes feeling more confident and more sure of what comes next.
Every path into work looks different, and there is no set timeline for any of it. But if the first step is the part that feels impossible right now, that is exactly the part we can help with.

We also congratulate Bianca MacIntyre on progressing from Provisional Psychologist to Registered Psychologist.

Casey is one of our amazing Inclusive Employment Managers, and she talks through what Inclusive Employment Australia actually does: sitting down with someone, working out what's getting in the way, and helping them find a job that suits them.
Her approach to building trust is refreshingly simple. Listen properly, understand where someone is at, and start from there.

When we first met Mitchell and his mum Allison, he was living at home. Allison had one big goal: to help Mitchell work towards supported independent living.
Mitchell is minimally verbal, so trust came first. We spent time with him at his day program, joining in the activities he loved. Bowling. Puzzles. High fives. "Well done, Mitchell." 🫸🫷
From there, the whole team worked together. A behaviour support plan built around routine. A dietitian who started small, with a slice of cheese next to his morning toast. Support staff who showed up consistently, every single day.
Fast forward to today, Mitchell lives in his own supported home. He follows his morning routine independently. He chooses his own activities, his own meals, even which supermarket he wants to shop at. And he's gone from two safe foods to enjoying pasta bakes, veggies and even salmon.
His mum's goal became his reality, one small step at a time.
Every person's path looks different, and progress like Mitchell's takes time, teamwork and the right supports. But his story shows what can happen when a team truly gets to know the person they're supporting.
